How Do Thermal Label Printers Work?

July 26, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

It’s quite simple. On the labels, whether on rolls or sheets, a label printer brings color, for labels on sheets, mostly ink (for inkjet printers) or toner (for laser printers). Mainly tags are used on a roll. It’s easy, faster, and a better result is achieved. And it is also cheaper with the appropriate thermal printers. Thermal printer because the color is put on the label with heat. The label printer has a pressure plate that is controlled via the mainboard. The pressure plate is told where it gets warm and where it stays cold. The warm = color on the label, cold = no color on the label.

There are two printing methods. Thermal transfer and thermal also called direct thermal.

Direct thermal label printer

With the direct thermal method, the blackening is produced directly on the label. The label material is treated so that it turns black at a specific temperature. This imprint is not as UV resistant and is mainly used for shipping labels. Previously often used for fax machines.

Thermal transfer label printer

In the thermal transfer process, a thermal transfer film is inserted into the label printer in addition to the labels. The ink that is on the thermal transfer film is transferred to the label by the heat of the printing plate. This is about the same as the typewriter ink ribbon, except that it was done with pressure rather than temperature. The thermal transfer process prints label for all areas. Nameplates in the automotive industry, labels for the food and chemical industries, in shipping, in the warehouse … the list is endless.

I am setting the label printer.

At the label printers, the pressure heat and the printing speed can be adjusted. Both must be matched to the label and transfer film material to achieve optimum printing. Also, the pressure of the printing plate the optimal print result and also so that the wear is low.

Label printer resolution

Various print resolutions ensure an optimal print. In general, 8, 12, and 24 dots are used, which are 200, 300, and 600 dpi (dots/inch) depending on the respective printhead of the label printer. The higher the resolution, the more beautiful the print can be.

Print server, cutter, and other options

Optionally, many of these label printers are available with a print server. This makes it possible to integrate the label printer into a network. Also, wireless (without cable) in a wireless network.

There are cutters, which are cutting devices that cut off the labels after printing; Internal and external winders that wrap the labels back on a roll after distribution and dispensing edges that detach the label from the tape to make it easier to remove from the tape.

Standalone printing solutions

Label printers can also be used if neither power nor network cables are present. There are solutions in which the information is stored on memory cards, with control via a keyboard and the power supply via the Akus. These are so-called standalone label printers.

Mobile label printer

Mobile label printers are often direct thermal printers. Often, these small devices, which are attached to a belt, for example, not enough space, even a ribbon under. These devices are usually controlled by radio. They are small, compact, to take anywhere …

So there are label printers for all areas from a small desktop printer to an industrial printer that prints labels in three shifts day and night.
