How Does a Combi Boiler Work?

August 14, 2020 By Miranda Jackson 1 Comment

The combi boiler wood/pellets combine the log heating with an automatic pellet boiler. The heater offers a lot of flexibility and comfort because homeowners can burn both pellets and firewood. Also, the boiler automatically switches over to pellet operation when the inserted wood supply is exhausted. We give an overview of the function of the combi boiler wood/pellets, show when it pays and what the technology costs with the promotion.

The function of the combination boiler for wood and pellets

If you want to heat with logs, but you do not always have time to refill the pieces of wood, you can install a combi boiler for wood and pellets because this combines modern log wood boilers and automatically operating pellet boiler in one device. As a rule, this consists of two separate combustion chambers, which are optimally adapted to the respective raw material. The regulation of the heating monitors the burning process and automatically switches over to the pellet boiler when the logs have burnt down in the heater. The boiler does not go out and even heats the building also environmentally friendly if homeowners lack time to refill.

Condensing technology for low heating costs

The optionally available condensing technology ensures particularly high efficiency in the combined wood/pellet boiler. This gains hidden energy from the hot exhaust gases. The fuels can be better utilized, and the heating costs are reduced. This is possible by the combustion exhaust gases flowing through a heat exchanger. This is traversed by the return water of the heater and cooled so strong that condenses the water vapor contained. The resulting heat is transferred to the heating water, and the burner must perform less.

Pellet storage integrated or as a separate container.

While homeowners insert the logs by hand into the combi boiler wood/pellets, as usual, the pellets can be stored in an integrated tank. This makes it possible to install in tighter room situations and also reduces the acquisition costs. If you want to support the wood gasifier boiler with pellets for a longer time, you can also opt for a separate tank. The wood pellets are then stored, for example, in a tissue tank or a specially equipped storage room.

Various power ranges are available.

Combi boilers for wood and pellets are equipped with automatic ignition and are particularly easy to operate. They are also available in different performance ranges and can thus be optimally adapted to the needs in the house.

Incidentally, the size of the combined wood/pellet boiler output depends on the heat demand in the house. An expert can determine this with a heat load calculation. The needs-based design then enables efficient and economical operation.

Combi boiler wood/pellets usually expandable.

Some manufacturers offer the possibility to retrofit existing boilers. For example, homeowners can use a wood gasifier boiler to expand a pellet module and benefit from the advantages of combined heating.

Areas of application of flexible wood heating

Combi boilers for wood and pellets are available in various performance ranges and can, therefore, be used in a wide variety of buildings. They can be particularly rewarding for homeowners who want to heat cheap logs, but do not always have enough time to refill. Since the storage of wood logs requires sufficient space, the devices are mainly used in rural areas.

Incidentally, well- known manufacturers for the firewood and pellet boilers are HDG Bavaria, Fröhling, Windhager, KWB, and Atmos. Anyone who chooses a boiler of these brands benefits from long experience, high quality, and a cheap and reliable heating system.

Costs and promotion of combi boiler wood/pellets

The combi boilers consist of wood gasification boiler and pellet boiler. They cost accordingly more than the respective heaters in detail. For use in typical single-family homes, the prices in 2018 are 8,000 to 15,000 dollars. Also, there are costs for the maintenance of the heating. Anyone interested in the offer, which an expert from their region can create individually, will receive reliable information.

High promotion of combi boiler for wood and pellets

Through the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA), the state supports homeowners with the purchase of combi boilers wood/pellets. There are subsidies for wood gasification boiler and pellet heating. In total, one-time payments of at least

  • 5,000 dollars in the renovation and
  • Three thousand dollars in the new building possible.

The prerequisite is that the heating system is equipped with a buffer or stratified storage tank, and homeowners apply for support before the start of construction at the BAFA. Also, combi boilers for wood and pellets must be entered in the list of eligible equipment of the BAFA.
