How Many Led Recessed Lights Do I Need?

August 11, 2020 By Miranda Jackson 1 Comment

The times in which one has worked according to a fixed scheme, namely x built-in spots per square meter of the same distance from each other, are long gone. Nowadays, we work on the basis of light requirements. You put the light where it’s needed. Take, for example, the kitchen: Instead of hanging the whole ceiling with built-in spots, you bring the spots only on the cooking island and kitchen cabinets. Is there a separate dining table? Then you can also use recessed spotlights.

Selection factors

In addition, the number of recessed spots and their position depends on various factors:
  • The function: Is it basic lighting, mood lighting, accent lighting or functional lighting? Each type of lighting makes different demands. For example, less accent lighting is required for the accent lighting, while for functional lighting you need to use spotlights with a high light output.
  • The light output: Some recessed spots have a higher light output. Depending on the function, you determine the required light output.
  • The beam angle: It indicates the extent to which a light beam is concentrated. The beam angle is always measured at the light source and not at the light. For example, a spot with a narrow beam angle is better suited for accent lighting, while spots with a large beam angle and consequently wide beam are better suited for basic lighting.
  • The distance between the ceiling and the floor or another object to be illuminated.

Example of lighting design

In order to get a better idea of how many light sources may be required, we show a light plan created by us up here. The blue symbols indicate where we would provide light sources.

Kitchen

As you can see, no particular scheme is used here, the light sources are instead based on the furnishings of the house. So in the kitchen the sink, the kitchen island and kitchen counter with some placed side is A – and mounted spots illuminated. No lights can be hung above the stove as the extractor hood is located here.

Courses

They notice that the main hallways throughout the house are well lit to allow safe passage. It is convenient to be able to switch this lighting separately, so you do not have to turn on all lights every time you go through a room.

Living room

In a living room, one can set atmospheric accents by the use of assembly and installation spots. Choose dimmable spotlights in the living room to adjust the lighting to the occasion and the atmosphere of the moment. Above the seating group, we attach six spots and in the reading corner we set up a floor lamp as an atmospheric complement. Above the table in the dining room is a pendant light that diffuses soft light in all directions, a good choice.

Bedroom

The bedroom receives eight spotlights in addition to the two traditional bedside lamps. The six recessed spots below provide enough light when choosing and fitting your clothes.

Bathroom

The bathroom has four spots. Always consider the safety zones for electricity in the bathroom. Spotlights in the shower must have at least an IP value of IPx7. Above the mirror, we provide a fluorescent tube with a warm white light.

TV room

In the TV room, bright lighting is not desirable. So we choose an led stripe with indirect light behind the sofa. As a complimentary mood light, we use a floor lamp. So, how many spotlights and other light sources you need to provide depends mainly on how you use the room. You can always contact our staff and ask for advice. Even tailor-made lighting design is possible.
