How to Clean Granite?

June 25, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Granite is a material highly appreciated by people and many will even have granite surfaces in several places in their house, such as on kitchen and bathroom counters or even on floors.

Do you like granite but don’t know how to take good care of it? In this article, you find out how to clean granite countertops and floors.

1. Quickly clean stains on granite

Before moving on to our tips for granite, it is important to mention that the speed of cleaning is paramount.

How to clean granite countertops? Indeed, if a stain of food appears on your granite countertop, for example, hurry to clean it. To do this, you can simply wet the stain in question with a little hot water so that it becomes softer and then you can easily clean the entire granite surface.

If you wait too long, it can be difficult to clean the stains on granite. So as soon as you spot a stain, you have to clean it up quickly.

2. Clean granite with soapy water

For the daily cleaning of a counter or other granite worktop, soapy water is sufficient and adequate.

  • Add a skin of liquid dish soap to cold water and spray generously on the granite.
  • Use a clean, soft cloth to scrub and clean the surface.
  • Polish the granite to finish with a microfiber cloth

Be careful to dry the counter well to avoid water stains and stains, which are much more difficult to remove.

3. Remove a grease stain on granite

Greasy stains can be difficult to remove, but not always. If you notice the presence of grease on the granite, we have a natural solution to clean everything; Marseille soap or black soap.

Both soaps are excellent for cleaning greasy surfaces, whether on a quartz and granite surface. For an oil stain, a butter stain or other grease stains, black soap or Marseille soap is a handy cleaning trick.

A few drops of black soap added to cold water are enough to clean and remove stains from the granite. Effective against grease stains but also to remove water and liquid stains.

4. How to remove a stubborn stain on granite

Care should be taken when removing stubborn stains from shiny surfaces such as granite, marble, or quartz. The cleaning product or tip you use should not scratch the surface, so be careful what you use.

So for a stubborn stain on granite here is a recipe for homemade cleaner:

  • Mix baking soda with water
  • Mix well to form a malleable dough
  • Apply the paste on the stain and leave to act for 5 minutes
  • Take a damp sponge or cloth and rub to remove the stain.

Remember to rinse and dry to finish cleaning the granite.

5. Never use for cleaning granite

Whether we talk about interior granite or an exterior granite surface, certain cleaning products should not be used. Indeed, it is necessary to avoid the use of too acidic or too abrasive products.

Here are products you should never use to clean and shine granite:

  • Lemon juice
  • White vinegar
  • Salt
  • Ammonia
  • Alcohol at 90

We find on different sites the trick of white vinegar to make granite shine, but we do not recommend it. You risk damaging the granite in the long run, so be careful.

6. How to make granite shine?

If you are looking for a way to shine a counter or other granite surfaces, then we have a tip for you. As we mentioned a little earlier, we forgot the white vinegar. It’s not a good idea!

So the thing we offer you is to use petroleum jelly simply! Yes, yes, petroleum jelly to make granite shine.

  • Take a soft, dry cloth and add a small amount of petroleum jelly
  • Rub the entire granite surface using circular movements
  • Use to finish a microfiber cloth to polish the surface

7. How to polish granite with a microfiber cloth?

Wiping your granite surfaces with a microfiber cloth will further polish your granite. But before passing the microfiber cloth, it is best to thoroughly clean the granite countertop with hot water to remove dust and stains.
