How to Clean Outdoor Plastic Furniture?

June 17, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Inexpensive, plastic outdoor furniture is always accessible in our gardens. Although they are relatively durable, they will need a good cleaning at the beginning of the end of the season to regain their radiance and lengthen their life expectancy.

Here are you some cleaning tips as well as the top cleaning products for cleaning plastic outdoor furniture.

1. Clean white plastic outdoor furniture with baking soda

Have your white plastic outdoor furniture turned a little yellow? Here is a small homemade recipe based on baking soda to clean the plastic:

  • Make a paste with baking soda and water.
  • Apply this mixture on old plastic furniture and insist on stubborn stains.
  • Leave on for a few minutes, rub gently and rinse with clear water.

For more stubborn stains, soak a sponge in a mixture of water and vinegar and sprinkle with baking soda. Then rub, emphasizing the spots, then rinse well.

2. Clean outdoor furniture with soapy water

For plastic outdoor furniture that has spent the winter in the shelter, cleaning with soapy water should be enough to remove stains and dirt. Here is how to do this cleaning:

  • Using a soft sponge or cloth, thoroughly scrub the entire surface of the table and chairs.
  • Then rinse with plenty of water to remove all traces of soapy water on the plastic.
  • Dry your outdoor furniture with a towel to avoid water spots.

It is important not to let the plastic dry in the open air, as you will quickly see the appearance of water stains on your green plastic furniture and table.

3. Vinegar for cleaning plastic outdoor furniture

If your plastic outdoor furniture is a little dirtier, add white vinegar to warm soapy water.

Still using a non-abrasive sponge, rub it above and below, not forgetting the crevices. Then rinse well with the outdoor hose or a bucket filled with clear water and pat dry with a towel.

4. Clean dirty plastic outdoor furniture

Did your outdoor furniture spend the winter outside, or did you forget to clean the white outdoor chairs and plastic table last season? It is possible that the plastic is very dirty, covered with black spots or that it has yellowed.

These few tips could successfully restore a youthful look to your outdoor furniture:

Oven cleaner for blackened white plastic:

It’s chemical, it smells terrible, but it works great for cleaning blackened white plastic! Sit outside in a place sheltered from the wind, protect plants and lawn if necessary. Wear gloves and watch your eyes.

  • Spray the cleaning product on your furniture or your plastic outdoor chair.
  • Let the product act for ten minutes on the plastic.
  • With a sponge or cloth, rub stubborn stains and rinse with clear water before drying your furniture.

Household alcohol for stubborn stains:

For outdoor furniture whose white plastic is blackened and very dirty, here is what to do:

  • Soak a household alcohol cloth and rub the stains for a long time.
  • Then rinse and dry the chairs and the outdoor table well.

Soda crystals to clean outdoor chairs and table:

  • Fill a bucket with hot water and add soda crystals to it.
  • Thoroughly clean all surfaces of your outdoor furniture, before rinsing and drying.

Be careful, do not forget to protect your hands with gloves and your eyes with safety glasses for each of the cleaning tips offered.

5. Bleach the yellowed plastic of outdoor furniture

It’s inevitable; white plastic will eventually turn yellow. On the other hand, we can restore the shine to our chairs or outdoor furniture in white plastic by bleaching them with different products.

Here are some solutions for cleaning and whitening the yellowed white plastic of outdoor chairs and tables:

  • Oxygenated water: Soak a sponge or a white cloth, and rub well everywhere. You can also apply hydrogen peroxide and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing.
  • Lemon juice: Another tip for whitening yellowish-white plastic patio furniture is lemon juice. On a sunny day, add the juice of a lemon to a small bucket of water and apply it to the entire surface to be bleached. Leave the lemon juice and the sun to act for a few minutes, then rinse.
  • Bleach: If nothing helps, use bleach diluted in hot water, in a proportion of one part of bleach for two of hot water. Apply this solution on your outdoor furniture and leave to act overnight. If some stubborn stains are still visible, rub them with undiluted bleach and rinse with plenty of water.

6. Cleaners for plastic outdoor furniture

Of course, there are cleaning products specifically designed to clean plastic patio furniture.

As with many other product categories, efficiency may not always be there and prices may be higher than if you opt for a homemade recipe.

Before making your choice on a cleaning product for plastic furniture, ask the sales staff of the store where you just bought your outdoor furniture for advice.

7. How to maintain your plastic outdoor furniture

You have spent a long time cleaning, rubbing, rinsing and drying your plastic outdoor furniture. Now, think about giving it some care to prevent the appearance of stains and other dirt.

  • Wax: to preserve the plastic of your outdoor furniture, apply car wax to your spotless furniture. Choose a clear wax or a color similar to that of your furniture, and use at least two or three coats.
  • Egg whites: to restore shine to your outdoor furniture, make the egg whites rise in snow, brush your furniture with this mixture and leave to act for around 30 minutes. Then rub with a clean cloth.
  • Baby toilet milk: to make your plastic outdoor furniture shine and protect, apply lotion or baby toilet milk using a soft cotton cloth.
