The oxygen sensor is vital in the exhaust system, which is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen that exits through the exhaust pipe. This information is supplied to the computer of the automobile to correct any error in the entry of air and oxygen into the combustion chamber, thus achieving optimum performance.
With the time the sensor suffers from oxidation, it accumulates carbon residues and other impurities that affect the performance of the car, this fault can be detected by the explosions of the engine and its low power.
Oxygen sensor cleaning guide for your car
Here’s how to clean the oxygen sensor:
- Check that the engine of the car is cold.
- Check the location of the oxygen sensor, and depending on the model of the car, you can have one or more sensors. This can be located in or near the catalyst. If you are not sure, you can consult the car’s user manual.
- Disconnect the sensor’s electrical connector.
- Remove the oxygen sensor with a wrench, which is usually 7/8 “or 15/16”. Remember to apply penetrating oil to the sensor thread.
- Submerge only the part of the thread in a container with gasoline, and you must clean it with a thick bristle brush.
- Remove dirty gasoline and clean gasoline, let it sit for 12 hours or more.
- Without removing the sensor from the container with gasoline, clean it again with the brush.
- Remove the sensor and dry it with a cloth.
- Place it for 15 minutes in the sun for internal drying and eliminate gasoline gas.
- Apply steps 4 through 8 for each oxygen sensor, if necessary.
- Screw the sensor into its original location using the open-end wrench.
- Plug in the sensor’s electrical connector to be recognized by the car’s computer.
- Turn on the car and check that the sensor is working correctly.

- Lower the oxygen sensor of the engine and apply the carbon klin until the liquid comes out transparent
- A medium bucket with lid
- Remove the oxygen sensor from the engine.
- When removing it, check if it has any damage, if so you must buy another one since it has no repair, otherwise, follow the steps.
- Fill the bucket with gasoline and immerse the sensor.
- Close the bucket and shake a little
- Let soak overnight
- The next day, shake the container again
- Remove the sensor and dry a paper towel, when doing this step use rubber gloves
Special Lubricant Method
- Special lubricant to clean sensors
- Lower the motor sensor
- Check if it has no-fault or is damaged
- Pour the lubricant into a container
- Soak the sensor in the lubricant for a few hours
- Dry with a clean, dry towel
- Clean liquid sensors
- Dry and clean towels
- Remove the motor sensor
- Pour some of the product on a towel and clean the sensor carefully
- Repeat the steps until it is spotless
- Dry with the help of another towel
Fuel Bucket Method
- A bucket
- Separate the motor sensor
- If no damage is found immerse it in a bucket with fuel for a few hours
- Remove and dry
- Repeat the steps as many times as necessary
- When removing the oxygen sensor from the engine, check if it is in good condition
- If so, dip the sensor in a bucket with vinegar
- Let it sit overnight
- The next morning stir the sensor a bit inside the vinegar
- Remove from the bucket and dry with a towel preferably paper
Method for Honda
- A clean sensor of your preference
- Carefully uncover the hose that covers the sensor
- Pour the cleaner little by little
- Let act for 10 minutes
- Repeat the steps if necessary
- Wait 1 hour to start the car
- Rubber gloves
- A bucket
- When removing the sensor soak it in a bucket with diesel oil
- Regularly remove the bucket so that the diesel penetrates well
- Leave on for a few hours
- Put on gloves and remove the sensor and dry with a paper towel
