How to Clean Shower Curtain?

July 1, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Don’t forget to wash your shower curtain!

Shower curtains get dirty very quickly. Mold, soap residue, body dirt, hair, almost everything goes there. And since the ideal is not to constantly buy new curtains, it is better to learn to clean them properly.

Some tips and cleaning products

1. White vinegar to wash the shower curtain

The vinegar is a cleaner that comes up in Grandma’s cleaning tips. It is available everywhere, very economical and 100% environmentally friendly. For effective and inexpensive cleaning of your shower curtains, it is therefore ideal. Here is how to remove dirt and mold from your shower curtains in 2 steps 3 movements:

  • Please pick up your dirty shower curtain, then lay it flat on the floor or a large table.
  • Soak a sponge in white vinegar, then rub the shower curtain in critical areas.
  • Once the stains and other dirt have been removed, machine wash your shower curtain with your detergent (make a program at 40° C). Once the laundry is done, all you have to do is put it back in to dry it.

2. Simply soapy water!

Fill your bath with hot water and pour a few drops of liquid dish soap. Put your shower curtain in the water and let it soak for a while. Then remove the stains with a sponge and rinse.

3. Baking soda

If mold and dirt stains reappear on your shower curtain, it’s time to draw out another flagship of grandmother’s tricks: baking soda. Stain remover, anti-humidity, and anti-odor are an economical product that does wonders for cleaning the house.

To clean a shower curtain with yellow, brown, or black stains, slide it into your washing machine with 2 large towels. In addition to your usual laundry, add half a cup of baking soda. It will come out of the washing machine like new.

4. Elbow oil and shower curtain

Rub your shower curtain with a little elbow grease, and it will return to new condition. Add white vinegar as needed.

5. Household alcohol and stains

For optimal cleaning of your shower curtains, you can also use household alcohol, a multi-purpose, and multi-surface detergent easily found on the market. Like white vinegar, it has an excellent disinfectant and stain-removing power.

To clean a shower curtain with household alcohol, unhook it, then lay it flat in your bathtub or on your bathroom floor. Then soak a household alcohol cloth, then rub the stains vigorously with them until they disappear. Finally, rinse quickly, and wipe with a dampened washcloth before putting your curtain back in its place.

6. Ammonia

Mix water and ammonia and with a sponge rub the stains. Then rinse your shower curtain.

7. Silicone wax

Coat your shower curtain with silicone wax so that it does not take mold—a good tip for keeping a shower curtain clean at all times.

8. Tea tree essential oil

Against mold, a proper technique is to use tea tree essential oil. It is known for its purifying, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. This essence helps control the appearance of mold, mainly due to standing water in the recipient. Apply 5-6 drops of essential oil directly on the sponge and pass it over the shower curtain. Say goodbye to traces.

9. Salt

To prevent the appearance of mold stains on your curtain, soak it in very salty water. Then rinse with clear water, then put your curtain back in place to dry it. The salt will act as a protective barrier.

Different types of shower curtains:

Cleaning a plastic and PVC shower curtain:

  • We take down the dirty shower curtain and lay it flat.
  • The shower curtain’s stained surface to be washed is rubbed with a brush or a scouring sponge soaked in white vinegar.
  • We put the shower curtain to be cleaned in the washing machine’s drum with its usual detergent, in synthetic textile mode, at 40 ° C.

Cleaning a cotton shower curtain:

  • We take down the dirty shower curtain and lay it flat.
  • Wipe stains thoroughly with a clean cloth.
  • We rub our Marseille soap directly on our washing shower curtain.
  • We machine wash the shower curtain, in cotton mode, at 60 ° C, with our usual detergent and a little bleach (only for white).
  • We know that molds love humidity. So before fixing our shower curtain, we soak it in heavily salted water. This shock treatment will protect him from these blackish and smelly tasks.

Whitewash a yellowed shower curtain

The most effective solution is baking soda to revive the white of a yellowed shower curtain.

You can do this in two ways:

  • If you want to do it by hand, mix a liter of warm water with a cup of baking soda. Then rub your shower curtain with a brush soaked in this mixture.
  • If you want to machine it, add half a cup of baking soda to your laundry.

It is also possible to bleach them with lemon.

Prevent the appearance of mold

Here is a shock treatment to prevent the reappearance of stains from cleaning your curtains due to humidity. Once out of the machine, soak the bottom of your shower curtain in a bucket or basin filled with boiling salt water.

And finally, to avoid having to wash your curtains too frequently, remember to ventilate them by keeping them closed once your shower is finished.
