A useful preventive measure for drip irrigation systems
One of the best ways to avoid freezing in your drip irrigation system is to install automatic drain valves. Place them at the lowest possible point within the system. The drain valves allow water inside the line to drain. Some experts also recommend using chlorine (2 PPM) in the system and flushing it thoroughly for a thorough cleaning before winter.
Begin by disconnecting the main water supply to the Drip Irrigation System. Do this the day before the freezing weather arrives. Make sure there is no water in the reflux device, filter, valves, drip hose, sprinkler, tubing, and pressure regulator. Run the controller/timer through your regular watering cycle. This allows each valve to open. The water pressure is released from both the valves and the mainline. Let the lines drain.
If the spring-loaded drain valves toward the end of the system are not installed correctly, the mainline may not drain completely. In some cases, the earth is not entirely flat, or the drain valve is positioned towards the bottom of the system. If you have any doubts about whether the main pipe is exhausted, use the air pressure to purge the system thoroughly.
Drip tubing, start by disconnecting the drip tubing with the rotating adapter from the filter assembly. Wrap this piece in the filter assembly so that dirt does not reach the drip tube. If your dripline is above ground level, open each end to allow water to drain. Lift the hose a couple of feet at a time so that the water drains. Once the water drains, close the ends of the drip pipe.
Irrigation valve assemblies
If your system uses AC valves with a pressure regulator and filter or battery-operated controllers, consider storing them in a warm area during the cold months of the year. If you can easily remove the complete assembly from the pipe, you can store this assembly unit entirely from the pressure regulator to the controller inside during the winter. If it is not possible to separate the valve assembly or the filter assembly, loosen or remove the valve bonnet to ensure that water from the top of the diaphragm and the filter cover can drain.
How to proceed through the duration of winter
Leave the system in the “off” position and completely drained throughout the winter. If you decide to water your plants, patio, or other items on your property, use your hose. In most cases, there is a lot of moisture inside the soil to maintain its vegetation until spring.
