How to Make a Garage Door Opener?

August 23, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Opening and closing your garage door can be quite a struggle after a long day of work. This way, you can easily make it automatically.

All you need is a smartphone and something like the Linear Z-Wave Garage Door Controller. As the name suggests, this black box makes every standard garage door automatic. You do not have to have a Linear garage door (fortunately). The Z-Wave supports many brands, and the brands that are not supported are indicated in this list.

Z-Wave supported Brands

The following garage door models are not compatible with the Linear® Garage Door Controller:

Chamberlain MyQ Models

WD962KEV, KPEV & MLEV
WD32KEV
HD 930EV & 420EV
LW500EV
PD752D & KPV

LiftMaster MyQ Models

8355, 8360, 8500, 8550, 8557 & 8587

Craftsman assurelink / MyQ Models

3043 & 30437

*Additionally, any of the LiftMaster / Chamberlain / Craftsman garage door motors connected to a Smart Control Panel (these have an LCD for the time and a motion sensor that turns on the light) are not compatible.

Genie Series III

PowerMax 1500
trilogies 1200 & 1500
IntelliJ 1000 & 1200

Why it is handy

Owners of a garage have doubted sometimes on the way whether or not they had closed their garage door. Driving back takes time, and besides, it is not ideal to leave your warm car in the winter or pouring rain to open a garage door. The Z-Wave is so easy because you do not need an individual remote control (which can also be stolen); all you need is a unique app that connects the Z-Wave to your smartphone.

How it works

Once you have purchased a Linear Z-Wave from Amazon, it’s time to assemble it. This piece of technology consists of two wireless units that work together. The first one must be plugged into a socket in your garage because it is connected to the garage door opener. This opener can be attached to the metal rails of your door if you already have an opener, or the wall or the ceiling through the screw holes.

In the control panel is a light processed, which lights up as soon as the door is put into operation. Handy if you open the door with your phone innocent, while someone else happens to walk by.
Also, a so-called Tilt Sensor is available. This sensor works together with the other wireless unit and the opener so that it can determine the position of the door. This makes it possible to see via your phone whether the garage door is open or closed.

How to put it together

The following video from Nexia explains how to get the system up and running in four minutes. The fact that the video lasts only four minutes already indicates how easy it is to install this garage door opener.

The app

The last part of the whole is the app for your smartphone or tablet. As mentioned, you can view the position of your door (is it open or closed?), But you can also set it to open or close at certain times automatically. All you need is a working internet connection. If you have multiple products from Nexia, then this door fits nicely in that list at home, because you can view your entire collection of Nexia gear through the same app.
