Neon signs are bright and catchy. You will find them in restaurants, beauty salons, and stores that are open late at night. You can create a similar effect on your computer to make the text on the screen shine. It helps to use bright colors and a black background. How to make a neon sign takes only a few minutes, and can be customized. An image editor, such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or Fireworks, includes tools that can help you make one. However, this example will be created in PhotoShop CS5.
Step 1. Create the document in Photoshop with the words
The first thing we will do is create a new document of 500×500 pixels (in my case) and with a blank background. Once this is done, we select the TEXT tool and the font style that you like the most.
We write the word or words that we want to add the neon effect in black and focus the image with the background.
Once this is done, we will couple the two layers that we have so that the filters that we introduce, act on both layers, and combine the results.
Layer> Attach Image
Step 2. Apply filters
Once coupled, start by inverting the tone and color of the image by pressing Ctrl + I simultaneously, and then we will apply a Gaussian blur with a radius of 2 pixels.
Filters> Blur> Gaussian blur> 2 pixels
Next, let’s solarize the image to get the edges of the letters to a close-up, thus getting the shape of the tubes used in real life. For this we are going to:
Filters> Stylize> Solarize
As you can see, our image is already taking the shape of a neon tube, although we will still have to define the edges more. To do this, we will increase the contrast in:
Image> Adjustments> Automatic contrast
Step 3. Color neon letters
We only need to give color to our poster of neon letters, and we can do the step from:
Image> Adjustments> Tone / Saturation
