How to Make a Wort Chiller?

August 4, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

The chiller is of vital use when you brew large quantities; it allows for cooling the boiling wort in a few minutes. A tested and approved Copper Cooling Coil can be manufactured quickly and cheaply by following these tips.

Necessary materials

– A ring of 10m of annealed copper 8×10 or 10×12
– Adapter for tap (fitting F22 or M24 with thread 20×27)
– Nipple reduced 20/27 F to 15/21 M
– Adapter 15/21 F for pipe diameter 12
– Pipes in plastic (aquarium) 12×16 and 10×12
– Stainless steel clamps

Instructions

1 – Unroll the copper crown, find a non-deformable template (saucepan, a bucket filled with sand, roll), slightly smaller than the size of the brewing pan, or the fermentation bucket (25cm for the bucket). Carefully wrap the copper around, trying to tighten the turns as much as possible.

2 – The annealed copper twists itself around the bucket, there is a spring effect, but by tightening well, we get to give it the shape of the bucket. This is the appearance of the coil after removing the template, the way is well preserved, but the copper being quite elastic and malleable, we must find a solution to maintain it.

3 – As the coil is too elastic and mobile, it can be held with bare copper wire to keep it in shape. Provide a piece of wire 1m long, from the bottom, and go up by twisting the wire around the copper turns. By repeating the operation four times on the perimeter, the coil does not move anymore. In this way, the corners are spaced evenly (about 1.5cm).

4 – Here is the appearance of the coil after having tied it up and twisted the extremities. The pipes can be connected to the copper ends and held together with the clamps. If the seal is not perfect, add a piece of rubber (a part of inner tube, for example) around the copper tube.

5 – Unscrew the faucet filter and connect the adapter to the faucet thread and the hose adapter to the nipple, make a leak test, put seals, and tighten the fittings if necessary. Put the oil drain hose in the sink or bucket to collect water.

6 – Once the coil is immersed in the boiling mash and the connected pipes, turn on the cold water tap, the temperature of the must decreases quite a bit (about 10 ° C / minute) at the start, then the heat exchange is a little slower but is realized all the same. Beware of the temperature of the water coming out of the coil; it is boiling at the start!
