How to Make Your Own Natural Fabric Softener at Home?

June 12, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

The vast majority of laundry products contain environmentally harmful chemicals. It is the same for softeners, or softeners, whether in liquid form or sheets. Also, fabric softeners on the market are found in landfills and take forever to decompose.

So what if you want to soften your clothes or linens without harming the environment? We turn to green alternatives! Here are our tips and tricks for making your natural fabric softener at home with safe ingredients.

1. Homemade fabric softener recipe

This recipe uses environmentally safe ingredients, which you probably already have at home. You can perfume, or not, with the essential oil of your choice. Here are the parts for this homemade fabric softener:

  • 500 milliliters of water
  • 300 milliliters of pure white vinegar
  • Two tablespoons of baking soda
  • 15 drops of essential oil of your choice

Now the steps:

  • Start by diluting the baking soda in the water
  • Then gradually add the white vinegar (Attention, the mixture will foam)
  • Add the essential oil and shake the mixture well before including it in your laundry
  • Add 50 milliliters of this homemade fabric softener to each wash

2. How to make handmade fabric softener sheets?

If you prefer to soften your clothes while drying, you can use this homemade natural fabric softener recipe:

  • 500 milliliters of water
  • 500 milliliters of pure white vinegar
  • Two tablespoons vegetable glycerin
  • 15 drops of essential oil of your choice
  • 100% cotton strips

Combine all liquid ingredients well in an airtight container. Immerse the cotton strips in it and leave them in the box until use.

To use your homemade fabric softener sheets, just take one, wring it out, and put it in the dryer.

This recipe can also be used as a homemade liquid fabric softener. It is then a question of not putting a strip there, and of adding 50 milliliters in the washing water or the compartment provided for this purpose.

3. Very simple natural softening wipes

Looking for a simple trick to soften your clothes? Try this exciting trip:

  • Pure white vinegar
  • The essential oil of your choice
  • A square of 100% cotton

Pour vinegar in a spray bottle and add a few drops of essential oil. Then, generously sprinkle your cotton square with this mixture before adding it to the dryer.

4. Baking soda, a natural softener

Because it lowers the pH of water, baking soda is a natural fabric softener. Because it softens the wash water, clothes will be rinsed better and, therefore, more flexible.

For more efficiency, dilute 1 cup of baking soda in hot water, and pour everything into the washing machine.

5. Homemade liquid fabric softener recipe

Here is an all-natural and environmentally friendly softener recipe:

  • 30 milliliters of pure white vinegar
  • 480 milliliters of water
  • Two tablespoons of baking soda
  • One tablespoon potato starch
  • 15 drops of essential oil, your choice

Mix all the ingredients well, being careful when adding baking soda, and store this softener in an airtight container. Pour between 50 and 100 milliliters in the rinse water or the fabric softener compartment.

6. White vinegar as an ecological fabric softener

The easiest and natural way to soften clothes or linens is to add pure white vinegar to the rinse water. To do this, in the last rinse cycle of your washing machine, add 1 cup of white vinegar to the sea.

If you want to impregnate your clothes with a pleasant smell, you can combine white vinegar and the essential oil of your choice.

7. Drying balls, an ecological fabric softener

Have you ever heard of wool drying balls? It’s a great alternative to fabric softeners. The drying balls work thanks to a mechanical action: by rubbing your clothes or linens, their fibers soften those of your clothes.

Also, the drying balls shorten the drying time and eliminate static electricity from clothes.

8. Make a home softener and bleach

This original tip will not only allow you to soften your clothes, but also, it will help to lighten clothes or white linens!

  • 1.5 liters of pure white vinegar
  • One erasable blue ink cartridge
  • 10-12 drops of the essential oil of your choice

In a jar, pour the white vinegar and add a significant drop of erasable blue ink, as well as the essential oil you have chosen. Shake well, and pour about 1 cup of this solution into the rinse water or the compartment provided.

9. A natural fabric softener with citric acid

Here is a homemade recipe for making a natural and ecological fabric softener:

  • 1 liter of water
  • Four tablespoons citric acid
  • Three tablespoons vegetable glycerin
  • 20 drops of essential oil of your choice

Mix all the ingredients well in an airtight jar. To soften your clothes or your household linen, pour about 50 milliliters into the rinse water or the softener compartment.

10. How to make a softener in granules?

This easy fabric softener recipe mainly uses dry, natural, and environmentally friendly ingredients:

  • 500 grams of coarse salt or Epsom salt
  • 20-30 drops of essential oil, your choice
  • 125 grams of baking soda

Start by mixing the salt and the essential oil, then add the baking soda. To use this homemade natural fabric softener, place two or three tablespoons of fabric softener granules in the fabric softener compartment.
