How to Properly Clean a Toilet?

June 29, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Remember to clean the toilet thoroughly!

The toilets must be clean at all times. But of course, it takes even more than that! They must also be well disinfected! The toilets have a lot of bacteria on them.

That is why it is crucial always to disinfect them thoroughly. Here are some tips to effectively clean the toilets.

Routine toilet maintenance

When cleaning the toilet, do not clean only the bowl!

Any good cleaning of the toilet obviously includes the toilet bowl and the toilet seat, the flush button, and even the door handle! You should also disinfect the cover and all the internal and external sides of the toilet.

Daily brushing

Clean your toilet daily with a brush. Do not wait for spots to appear before doing so.

Disinfect the toilet every week

Minimum once a week, disinfect your toilet using one of the methods suggested above. It is imperative to clean the toilet as often as possible to eliminate bacteria.

Clean the toilet bowl

The bowl of the toilet must be cleaned every week with:

  • a sponge sprinkled with citric acid
  • or a sponge soaked in white vinegar.

Wash with a sponge

To tackle your toilets’ cleaning, start with a sponge with a scratching side and a special toilet cleaner. Most of them have anti-bacterial and anti-scale properties. Wash all the edges of the bowl as well as the part located near the toilet.

This technique can seem long and tiring. But after a few efforts, your bowl will be clean and fresh, free of bacteria.

Clean, disinfect, deodorize toilets.

To clean the bottom of the toilet, first, empty the water from the bowl. To do this, you just need to flush the toilet and shut off the water. Another solution: repel the water vigorously using the toilet brush. Once the bottom is emptied, pour a liter of white vinegar, close your toilet, and leave overnight. The next morning, the deposit will disappear in one brush stroke. Fast and efficient, this solution has the advantage of being ecological.

Bleach

Bleach is one of the most widely used household products. To clean your toilet and disinfect it, pour 200 ml of the product on the bowl’s walls. Leave on for fifteen minutes, then flush the toilet to rinse. Be careful with your clothes, however, because bleach discolors fabrics.

Methylated spirits to disinfect

Every day, rub your toilet with a little methylated spirit. It is always well disinfected. It is vital to clean the toilet properly.

Place toilet paper in the bowl

Before applying the products (the ones you will have to leave overnight), line your bowl with toilet paper. It will be better for absorption.

Which product to remove lime from toilets

Citric acid

Hands protected by household gloves, clean the lime stains using a brush impregnated with a solution consisting of 1/2 liter of hot water and 4 tablespoons of citric acid. Rinse generously with water and then wipe dry.

Vinegar

  • Sprinkle the walls with coarse salt sprinkled with hot vinegar.
  • Leave on overnight.
  • Then scrape with a plastic spatula.

Bicarbonate and vinegar

Scrub with a stiff brush soaked in baking soda and heated white vinegar.

Don’t worry about rushing the gas, which is impressive but harmless, as it is advantageous in removing stains and getting rid of lime in the toilet. The ideal dosage is 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate for a glass of vinegar.

Put bubbles in your toilet!

We all have them in our refrigerators. Cola has unsuspected virtues: that of dissolving limestone and cleaning your toilets very well. To use it, first empty the water from the bowl. Then pour the equivalent of one to two glasses in your toilet. Go to sleep. When you wake up, simply rub with the brush: the carbon dioxide of the drink will have had its effect! Fun and inexpensive, this method is a useful troubleshooting solution.

Remove the dark circle in the toilet bowl.

Borax and lemon

Apply a paste composed of borax and lemon juice on dark circles. Leave on for at least 2 hours. Then rub with a brush.

Removing cement stuck to the toilet bowl

Boiling water

  • Apply sheets of toilet paper, then pour boiling water.
  • Repeat until the cement is softened.
  • Then scrape with a wooden or plastic spatula.

White vinegar

  • The acidity of the vinegar will accelerate the softening of the cement.
  • Apply sheets of toilet paper, then pour boiling water.
  • Repeat until the cement is softened.
  • Then scrape with a wooden or plastic spatula.

Soda crystals, the anti-scale solution

The soda crystals will offer optimal maintenance to descale your toilets. It is necessary to pour a pan of boiling water and 1/2 glass of soda crystals into the bowl. Leave to act for a while before scrubbing with the brush. Let sit for several hours before flushing.

Clean the toilet seat

Household alcohol

Clean the toilet seat with a cloth dampened with household alcohol. If you don’t have any alcohol to burn, you can use an antibacterial wipe.

Oxygenated water

Clean with a sponge soaked in warm water and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrochloric acid for filthy areas

Sometimes there is only this technique left to get rid of the cement. Hydrochloric acid can be used for really dirty or very limey toilets, and when the white vinegar was not enough to clean everything. But you must be aware that this is an ecological heresy and a dangerous product. If you still value this product, line the bowl with paper and then pour hydrochloric acid. Wait a few minutes, then pull the chain. Repeat if necessary.

WARNING: Only handle hydrochloric acid with care, careful of splashes that could burn you dangerously, and the hands protected by gloves.
