The humidity inside the incubator is directly affected by the moisture outside. Humidity changes with the seasons, and it can be challenging to maintain high humidity inside the nursery during the first two months of the year because the moisture in the room will below. Conversely, it is difficult to prevent the humidity inside the incubator from becoming too high during June and July. The surface area of the water inside the incubator will influence the moisture. By increasing the surface of the water, you can increase the humidity in the incubator.
You will need to
- An incubator
- Two small wells
- A wet/dry thermometer
- A wet/dry thermometer conversion table
- Put a wet/dry thermometer in the incubator. A wet-bulb thermometer incorporates a cotton wick that is immersed in water. The water that is absorbed by the wick evaporates and therefore cools the wet side of the thermostat.
Place a small bowl on the floor of the incubator and fill it with warm water. The surface area of the cup will influence the humidity, with a larger surface area for the creation of a more humid environment. The depth of the container is not essential.
Calculate the humidity by taking the difference between the wet and dry bulb temperature and looking at the corresponding figure in the conversion table that is supplied with the thermometer to measure the humidity. If the moisture in the incubator is high, very little moisture will evaporate from the wick, and the wet-bulb temperature will not be much lower than the dry bulb thermometer reading. The humidity inside the incubator should be between 60 and 65 percent for the first 18 days of incubation.
Place a second small container in the incubator for the last three days of incubation since the humidity has to be much higher, and the surface of the additional water will be required. The moisture inside the incubator during the last three days before hatching needs to be between 80 and 85 percent.
- Close the incubator lid as soon as possible after working on it, since the humidity inside the incubator is immediately affected when you open the unit.
