The initial dealer time on the Chevrolet 350ci engine is easily adjustable for automotive maintenance enthusiasts using only a few tools and an inductive dimming light, and should only take a few minutes. The ignition advance amount will depend on the engine version and the model of the car, but it is usually adjusted between 8 and 12 degrees before the BTDC (BTDC, from the English “before top-dead-center”), or before the dead center higher. Contact a local Chevy dealer or auto parts store for the appropriate setting.
Instructions
- Secure the car so it can not move while it is running. Apply the parking brake or place wedge blocks in front and behind the wheel to prevent the car from moving accidentally. Bring it to operating temperature. With the car parked (or neutral), remove the inlet assembly from the air filter. Disconnect all vacuum lines to which the assembly could be connected and group them if necessary. Disconnect the suction hose attached to the vacuum advance of the distributor and remove it. Start the car.
- Connect the power cables of the regulation light to the battery. The red wire is attached to the positive terminal of the battery and the black clamp is connected to the negative terminal. The third cable of the regulating light (the inductive clamp) is attached around the spark plug wire (cable) of cylinder number one (front, spark plug connector on the driver’s side). Make sure that the regulating light wires are clear of the moving parts and restart the motor.
- It directs the regulating light on the marker (time pointer) on the distribution casing next to the harmonic balancer and activates the strobe light (usually with a trigger). The harmonic balancer is a 6 to 8 inch (15.2 by 20.3 cm) diameter disc attached to the front end of the crankshaft. The flash of the strobe light illuminates the distribution marks on the balancer to signal the initial feed set at the distributor. If the indication is incorrect, loosen the manifold retaining bolt with the 9/16 inch open-end wrench or manifold wrench so that it can be rotated effortlessly. Holding the indicator light with one hand and the other available to turn the distributor, find the appropriate time position of the distributor. Unplug and place the dimming light securely to the side, and tighten the distributor retaining bolt so that it is secured. If the engine running speed has changed due to the interval setting, use the screwdriver to adjust the idle brake adjustment screw to obtain proper rest. Reattach the hoses to the air filter assembly and reinstall.
Tips
Try driving the vehicle in normal situations. Consider unusual performance issues, such as pinging or slow operation. Too slow progress will cause the engine to have less responsibility and appear low in power. The pinging is the early “detonation” of air/fuel in the cylinder and is an indication of the excessive advancement of the total regulation. Severe damage to the motor can occur.
