How to Use an Electric Fence Tester?

August 4, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

What you need Electric fence tester An electric fence tester is a tool used by owners of fencing to check faults in the electric fence and to localize inconsistencies in the current flowing through the lines. It works in the same way as a voltmeter but is designed for electric fencing. A standard voltmeter will not work for this type of task.

What is the success factor in an electric fence? Of course the electrical voltage! That is why it is so important to use a fence tester to check the energy in the fence wire fence.

Prevention is better than cure.

It is essential to always know how much voltage there is on an energetic fence, even if there is no direct cause to measure the fence voltage. Finally, only the security and safety of the entire wall can be guaranteed when there is sufficient voltage on all conductors. If the fence voltage is too low, the impulse will not be sufficiently strong on contact. In the worst case, this leads to the animals overflowing and damaging the fence.

On the other hand, wild animals can enter your pasture and injure or kill your cattle. There are also statutory regulations of maximum values of the tension that may be on a fence. It is essential to make it a daily routine, to test the stress on the wall.
Also, it is possible that the voltage is not sufficient due to damage to the conductor, damage to the energizer, or due to excessive vegetation. For this, you need the fence tester.

Measuring the fence voltage

With the fence tester, you can measure the fence voltage. A digital display or LED makes it immediately visible whether the voltage value is too high, too low, or just right. The tester has multiple levels to be used with different pulse strengths and devices. Professional electric fence testers usually have six or eight degrees. They are there for the quick and easy tension control of the fence and do not require their own earthing. The fence tester is mobile to use or directly to the wall. The testers for electrical fences are available with or without battery, have a protective cover, and a sensitive, long test pin made of stainless steel. Quality products can be distinguished by a large display or have a broad measuring range. Digital electric fence tests are wireless.

Instructions

Step 1 – Panel tests

You want to start by testing both sides by immediately touching the control panel with your electric fence tester to ensure that the power is correctly transmitted through the input and output ports. These are the ends that enter the switch box itself. Make sure that both give a good reading, which ensures that your control box is not a source of problems with voltage loss of your fence.

Step 2 – Spot tests

Then you walk the fence of your fence with your electric fence, and you do a line test every 10 to 20 meters to ensure that there is no loss of force in your fence. If you find that an area of 10 to 20 meters is not displayed correctly, continue and check again. If you do not see any problems when you go further, you want to go back to the last good reading and test your lines more thoroughly to find the cause of your problem.
