What To Do If Your Cat Has A Hairball?

August 24, 2020 By Miranda Jackson Leave a Comment

Although the phenomenon of hairballs is common in cats, it is still unpleasant for your pet. Fortunately, there are solutions to prevent hairballs in cats or at least reduce them. Curiosity Insight helps you to prevent hairballs in your cat with the help of remedies and solutions.

The solutions against hairballs:

Before moving on to the tips for reducing and preventing hairballs in cats, it is necessary to understand better where they come from.

Why have hairballs?

It’s simple; cats can spend hours and hours washing and licking their body and, therefore, their hair. As the cat’s tongue is rough, many hairs are swallowed by the cat.

Because the cat does not digest hair, hairballs form in the stomach and are shed over time. It is not a dangerous phenomenon for cats, but nothing prevents us from helping your cat or at least preventing these famous hairballs.

Before moving on to our solutions and remedies, here is a product that will greatly help your cat if he often makes hairballs. It is a food supplement in the form of malt paste, which dramatically promotes the evacuation of hairballs.

Cats with long hairs and furballs

And yes, it makes sense, long-haired cats will tend to make more hairballs than very short-haired cats. Persian cats, for example, are used to making a lot of hairballs.

Also, if your cat is mainly an indoor animal, the hairball phenomenon will be much more common than other cats that live a lot outside, for example. It is, therefore, important to be vigilant if you own a cat that often vomits hairballs.

So here are some hairball solutions, home remedies, and products below.

1. A comb for long-haired cats

As mentioned in the previous point, it is essential to pay particular attention to the long-haired cat. Because it is these long-haired cats that have the most hairballs, fortunately, it is possible to easily find combs and brushes specially designed for small animals with long hair.

The molting period in cats…  It is important to brush your cat very often during the cat’s molting period to prevent massive hairballs. Spring and fall are therefore two times during the year when your cat is likely to make more hairballs, so pay special attention.

Small, medium, or large cat here is the Furminator comb, which is an anti-molt comb and which helps to reduce the formation of hairballs in cats considerably.

2. Help groom your cat

To continue in the same vein as the last tip, it is crucial to help with the grooming of your cat to help it to make fewer hairballs. The comb we presented to you above is a right accessory for grooming long-haired cats, but there are plenty of others that you can choose from as well.

And yes, why not participate in the grooming of your cat to help him swallow less hair and thus prevent the formation of hairballs. Getting into the habit of brushing your cat every day is a great anti hairball initiative. Whether using a grooming glove or a brush, it is essential to brush your cat every day to remove dead hair.

3. Growing catnip

Catnip is an excellent solution to prevent cat balls but mainly to help your cat with his digestion. Catnip makes it possible to eliminate cat balls more easily and quickly, thanks to vomiting. It also helps the cat’s digestion in addition to preventing the formation of massive hairballs.

So if you can, growing catnip is a great way to help your cat get rid of hairballs more effectively.

4. Cat food rich in fiber

To help your cat’s digestive system, and help it eliminate hairballs, choose a cat food that is high, very high in fiber. Very useful in preventing the hair from staying too long in the cat’s stomach.

Fiber enriched pâté kibbles are great for cats and for controlling hair in their digestive system. On the other hand, it is crucial to seek the advice of a veterinarian before changing your cat’s diet or giving it a diet rich in fiber for a while.

5. Watch out for your anti hairball remedies!

Milk is ineffective against hairballs.

Many people say that milk can help cat hairballs pass more easily . This natural remedy for hairballs is entirely wrong. Giving milk to your cat will not help with their hairballs, let alone with their digestion. It’s a legend!

Vegetable oil and hairball

Just like milk, vegetable oil is an ineffective remedy for your cat and their hairballs. As the oils are absorbed from the intestines, this remedy remains ineffective against hair and balls; it is merely to be avoided.

6. Discourage your cat

If your cat is behaving excessively when it comes to grooming, you can, of course, try to discourage him. It’s not apparent, but when you notice that your cat is compulsively licking its hair, you may distract it or quietly lure it into another activity.

Also, did you know that a stressed and anxious cat licks itself even more and can, therefore, have more hairballs which are very bad for its health in general? It is, therefore, necessary to pay particular attention to the environment of your cat to eliminate this source of stress and thus reduce hairballs.
